Now Salem, Ma has a long standing tradition with the Federalist Party. Samuel McIntire even invented an architectural style for them, mainly to have tunnels connect to their homes through the basement fireplace arches. These tunnels helped them resist Thomas Jefferson's custom duties. Also only 8 years after the war with England they will adopt the colors of the Tory Party, white and black, as their own to adorn their chimneys. Salem can even claim home to Timothy Pickering who wrote the Alien Sedition Act in which recent times we seen resurface under the Patriot Act and Homeland Security. In fact the old Colonial Hill Fort was rebuilt by Ralph Waldo Emerson's maternal grand uncle and rededicated to Pickering. Following this endeavor a series of tunnels will be made throughout town to connect to those chimneys using the arches Emerson used in the reconstruction of the fort to help Salem Federalist avoid Thomas Jefferson's custom duties.
